How much detergent to use

Too much detergent causes suds, residue and smells. Use the dose for your load and water.

More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Extra detergent leaves residue on the fabric and in the machine, creates foam that can stop the machine draining and spinning properly, and feeds mould.

Guidelines

  • Follow the dose on the pack for your load size, soil level and water hardness.
  • Use detergent made for your type of machine. High efficiency (HE) detergent for front loaders and many modern top loaders is low-foaming.
  • Use less for small or lightly soiled loads.
  • Do not pour liquid detergent on top of clothes in the drum unless the pack says so. Use the drawer or a dosing ball.
  • If clothes feel stiff or look dull, or you see suds in the final rinse, reduce the dose.
