The rubber ring around the door traps water, hair and detergent in its folds. Left alone, it grows black mould and smells, and the rubber can deteriorate.

Steps

  1. Open the door and pull back the seal so you can see inside the folds.
  2. Remove hair, lint and any small objects.
  3. Wipe with a cloth dampened with warm water and a little washing-up liquid, or a mix of white vinegar and water.
  4. For stubborn mould, wipe with a cloth soaked in a diluted household disinfectant, then rinse the area with a clean damp cloth.
  5. Dry the seal and glass with a dry cloth.
  6. Leave the door ajar so the drum can air out.

Check the seal for splits as you go. A small tear will leak and gets worse.
